Understanding Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Dilation and Curettage is a surgical procedure in which a gynaecologist or obstetrician first gently opens (dilates) the cervix and then removes tissue from the lining of the uterus (womb) using a curette (a small spoon-shaped tool) or suction device. Hence, the name Dilation and Curettage, or, in short, D&C.

Our experts may perform a D&C for several reasons, such as:

  • Removing tissue from your uterus after a miscarriage, abortion or when parts of the placenta are left in your uterus post-delivery.
  • To check for uterine polyps, endometrial intraepithelial hyperplasia, and uterine cancer.
  • To diagnose the underlying cause of unusual uterine bleeding and bleeding after menopause.

Benefits of Dilation & Curettage (D&C)

Here are the key benefits:

  • Precise diagnosis
  • Symptom relief such as heavy bleeding, pain, and risk of infection
  • Important for womens health after a miscarriage or abortion
  • Minimally invasive
  • Quick recovery

Our team focuses on preserving future fertility and avoiding unnecessary removal of uterine tissue.

Types and Approaches of D&C at Cocoon Hospital

Our surgeons are experienced in performing all the following methods to remove uterine tissue for precise diagnosis and treatment:

Types by Purpose Description
Diagnostic D&C Performed mainly to collect endometrial tissue for microscopic examination when the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding is unclear.
Therapeutic D&C Used to remove retained products of conception after miscarriage or abortion, or to clear abnormal uterine tissue causing heavy bleeding.
Types by Method Description
Suction Curettage (Vacuum Aspiration) A soft or rigid plastic cannula is used to suction out uterine contents. It is commonly performed for first-trimester abortions, miscarriage management, or removal of molar pregnancies.
Sharp Curettage A metal spoon-shaped instrument called a curette is used to scrape the uterine lining. It is often performed for diagnostic tissue sampling or removal of uterine polyps.
Combination with Hysteroscopy In selected cases, hysteroscopy is combined with D&C to visually inspect the uterine cavity before removing tissue, improving diagnostic and treatment accuracy.

When is Dilation & Curettage (D&C) Recommended ?

Our experts can recommend it for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in conditions such as:

  • Heavy or abnormal bleeding between periods.
  • Clear the uterus after a miscarriage.
  • Remove retained placental tissue following childbirth.
  • Investigate suspected abnormal growths (polyps, fibroids, or endometrial hyperplasia).

D&C Procedure at Cocoon Hospital: Step-by-Step Approach

Here is what you can expect:

  • Pre-surgical evaluation

Detailed medical history review and diagnostic tests to assess your condition. You should make sure they know what medications you take or about any allergies you have.

  • Cervical dilation preparation

Medication or small instruments may be used to gently open the cervix before the procedure.

  • Procedure

The doctor inserts a speculum, dilates the cervix, and removes uterine tissue using a curette or suction device under anesthesia. They may send a sample of the tissue to a lab for analysis.

The procedure itself takes about five to 10 minutes. However, the whole process takes longer due to receiving anesthesia and other surgical preparations.

  • Post-procedure monitoring

Short observation period to ensure there are no complications. It’s generally an outpatient procedure, so you go home the same day.

Review of results and further treatment planning if required.

Where does D&C get its name from?

It gets its name from the following:

    • Dilation of the cervix: Meaning, your healthcare provider dilates, or opens, your cervix
    • Curette: Meaning the doctor uses a thin instrument known as a curette to scrape your uterine wall and remove tissue.

    Is having a D&C painful?

During the procedure you may not feel any pain, as it is done under anesthesia. But after D&C, you may feel cramps similar to menstrual cramps.

What are the risks of a Dilation and Curettage (D&C)?

It is a safe and effective procedure when done under professional guidance; however, like any other procedure, D&C can cause the following complications:

    • Uterine perforation (a small tear in your uterus)
    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • In rare cases, if you had a D&C after a miscarriage, you might develop Asherman’s syndrome (formation of scar tissue in the uterine cavity).
