Understanding Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a gynaecological condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (womb) grows on other parts of the body. When this tissue grows in the wrong places, such as the ovaries, peritoneum, and fallopian tubes, it can cause painful symptoms that can impact not only your menstrual cycle but also your daily life.

Our experts help plan treatment for endometriosis based on the severity of the condition, future family planning, and age to help prevent progression and improve long-term quality of life.

Advanced Diagnosis for Endometriosis

To find out if you have endometriosis, our experts will likely start by giving you a physical exam. You'll be asked to describe your symptoms, such as where and when you feel pain. They can order the following diagnostic tests for detailed analysis:

  • Ultrasound uses sound waves to make pictures of the inside of the body.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field and radio waves to make images of the organs and tissues within the body.
  • Laparoscopy is a definitive test for endometriosis that uses a small camera (laparoscope) to look inside your pelvis.

Treatment Options for Endometriosis at Cocoon Hospital

There is currently no known cure, but endometriosis symptoms can be treated with medicines or, in some women, surgery. In some cases, endometriosis can go away on its own, while many people need treatment to manage symptoms like pain.

Here are the treatment options:

Pain Medications: NSAIDs like ibuprofen reduce inflammation and menstrual cramps; stronger prescription pain relievers are for severe cases.

Hormonal Therapies:

  • Combined birth control pills, patches, rings, or IUDs regulate cycles and shrink endometrial tissue.
  • Progestin therapy (pills, injections, Depo-Provera shots, or levonorgestrel IUD) thins the uterine lining and stops periods.
  • GnRH agonists/antagonists (e.g., leuprolide/Lupron, elagolix/Orilissa) create temporary menopause to halt tissue growth.

Surgical Options:

  • Laparoscopic “keyhole” surgery can be done to see inside your body and identify endometriosis with a high-definition camera (laparoscope). The surgeon can insert additional surgical instruments to eliminate the problematic tissue.
  • Hysterectomy or oophorectomy for severe, unresponsive cases (last resort).

Fertility Treatments: IVF or assisted reproduction if infertility persists post-surgery.

Lifestyle and Complementary:

  • Anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, acupuncture, and pelvic floor therapy.
  • Pelvic physiotherapy and heat therapy for pain relief.

Can Endometriosis go away on its own?

In some cases, endometriosis can go away on its own. This can also happen postmenopause, which is often linked to a drop in the amount of estrogen in the body. However, many people require personalized treatment based on the severity of the condition and many other individual factors.

Can Endometriosis be prevented?

Endometriosis isn’t a condition you can prevent. But certain factors (such as having been pregnant more than once and breastfeeding) can reduce your risk of developing the condition. A healthy diet and regular exercise also play a role in lowering risk.
