A vaginal infection is commonly referred to as 'vaginitis', meaning inflammation or infection of the vagina. There is naturally good microbiota, or a “community of microorganisms in your vagina composed of bacteria, some fungi, and other organisms", which is necessary for a healthy vaginal environment. But when this environment gets disturbed, harmful microorganisms can grow; this can lead to vaginitis.
Here are the common types of vaginal infections:
| Type | Cause |
|---|---|
| Bacterial Vaginosis | A decrease in beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria in the vagina, leading to an imbalance of vaginal flora. |
| Chlamydia | Sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. |
| Genital Herpes | STI caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), commonly HSV-1 or HSV-2. |
| Genital Warts | Highly contagious STI caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). |
| Gonorrhoea | STI caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. |
| Thrush | Fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida albicans yeast. |
| Trichomoniasis | STI caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. |
| Non-Infectious Vaginitis | Vaginal irritation triggered by products such as soaps, douches, perfumes, detergents, or synthetic clothing materials. |
Its possible to have more than one infection at a time. For example, if you have bacterial vaginosis, you’re at higher risk of developing chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital herpes and trichomoniasis.
At Cocoon Hospital diagnosis is done through advanced diagnostic tools and other tests to determine the actual reasons behind the infection. This helps personalise the treatment and improve the effectiveness of the regimen.
Diagnostic tests may include the following:
Not all the vaginal infections are treated in the same manner. If there are symptoms, our experts curate the treatment based on the type, cause, and severity of the condition and pregnancy status.
| Type of Vaginitis | First-line Treatment Options* |
|---|---|
| Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) | Oral metronidazole for 7 days, metronidazole vaginal gel for 5 days, or clindamycin vaginal cream. |
| Yeast Infection (Candida) | Antifungal vaginal creams, tablets, or suppositories such as clotrimazole or miconazole for 1–7 days; oral fluconazole single dose in selected cases. |
| Trichomoniasis | Oral metronidazole or tinidazole, with a multi-day treatment course generally preferred for women. |
| Other STI-related Vaginitis | Specific oral, injectable antiviral, or antibiotic treatment depending on the sexually transmitted infection (STI) involved. |
| Irritant/Allergic Vaginitis | Discontinuation of the irritant, gentle intimate hygiene, and soothing emollients if recommended by a healthcare professional. |
| Atrophic (Menopausal) Vaginitis | Vaginal moisturizers or lubricants, and local vaginal estrogen therapy (cream, tablet, or ring) as prescribed. |
Partner treatment may also be recommended for sexually transmitted infections; treating both partners is crucial to prevent reinfection.
Always complete the course of treatment to avoid resistance, meaning if you leave the medicine in the middle, it may not be effective in the future. The condition can become complex to treat in the future with the existing medicine.
Note: Do not self-diagnose or self-recommend the treatment because the medicine used to address bacterial infection may not be effective for yeast infection.
