Understanding Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows our gynaecologists to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a specialized instrument called a colposcope. The colposcope stays outside the vagina and uses magnification and bright light to detect abnormal tissue changes that may not be visible during a routine pelvic exam.

During the procedure, a special vinegar-like solution may be applied to highlight suspicious cells. If abnormal areas are identified, a small biopsy sample may be taken for laboratory evaluation.

Benefits of Colposcopy

Here are the key benefits:

  • Early detection of abnormal or precancerous cervical cells.
  • Helps diagnose HPV-related cervical changes.
  • Supports timely treatment and prevention of cervical cancer.
  • Allows accurate evaluation after abnormal Pap smear results.
  • Detects cervical inflammation, genital warts, or abnormal tissue growths.
  • Safe, minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
  • Quick recovery with minimal downtime.

Types of Colposcopy Procedures at Cocoon Hospital

Our surgeons are experienced in performing all types of Colposcopy for an accurate diagnosis:

Procedure Details
Diagnostic Colposcopy A non-invasive examination using a colposcope to magnify and inspect the cervix, vagina, and vulva after applying acetic acid (vinegar solution). It helps identify abnormal areas without tissue removal and typically takes 10–20 minutes.
Colposcopy with Biopsy Includes a punch biopsy or endocervical curettage (ECC) of suspicious areas identified during the examination. Local anesthetic may be used, and tissue samples are sent for laboratory analysis to confirm dysplasia or cancer.
Colposcopy with LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) A therapeutic extension in which a heated wire loop removes abnormal tissue if severe lesions are detected. It may be performed during or after colposcopy in selected cases.
Digital Colposcopy An advanced variation using digital imaging for high-resolution visualization and documentation of cervical findings, improving diagnostic accuracy and follow-up evaluation.
