Understanding Hysteroscopy

A Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows our experts to look at the inside of your uterus and cervix (lower part of the uterus).

The procedure uses a thin tube known as a hysteroscope, which is inserted via the vagina. The hysteroscope is like a telescope with a camera on it, which sends images of your uterus onto a video screen.

Our experts can recommend the procedure for the diagnosis or treatment of different uterine diseases and conditions.

Benefits of Hysteroscopy

Here are the key benefits:

  • Minimally invasive.
  • Highly accurate diagnosis.
  • Allow the surgeon to locate abnormalities and remove them without damaging surrounding tissue.
  • Allow the surgeon to diagnose and treat conditions with a single surgery.
  • Improves quality of life.
  • Fertility preservation.
  • Shorter recovery.

Types of Hysteroscopy Procedures at Cocoon Hospital

Our surgeons are experienced in performing both methods for diagnosis or treatment of different uterine diseases and conditions.

Methods Details
Diagnostic Hysteroscopy Diagnostic hysteroscopy identifies structural irregularities in the uterus that may be causing abnormal bleeding. It may also be used to confirm the results of other tests, such as an ultrasound or hysterosalpingography (HSG).A thin hysteroscope is inserted to view the uterine cavity and identify polyps, fibroids, or adhesions using saline distension. It is often performed as an office-based procedure and does not require incisions.
Operative Hysteroscopy Operative hysteroscopy treats an abnormality detected during a diagnostic hysteroscopy. Our doctors may perform diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy at the same time, avoiding the need for a second surgery. It includes specialized instruments for polyp or fibroid removal, adhesiolysis, or septum resection through the hysteroscope channel. Bipolar energy with saline is commonly used for improved safety.

Sometimes, you may have both types done at once based on the condition.

When is a Hysteroscopy Needed ?

Our experts can consider Hysteroscopy if:

  • You are experiencing heavier than normal menstrual periods and/or bleeding between periods.
  • You are bleeding after menopause.
  • You are having difficulties getting or staying pregnant.
  • You want to remove an IUD.
  • You require removal of a small tissue sample (biopsy).
  • You require removal of endometrial lining.

Hysteroscopy Procedure at Cocoon Hospital: Step-by-Step Approach

Here is what you can expect:

  • Pre-procedure evaluation
Medical history review, pelvic exam, and required tests (blood tests, pregnancy test). Medication guidance and preparation instructions are provided.
  • Preparation on the day
You change into a gown, empty your bladder, and may receive anesthesia or a mild sedative depending on the procedure.
  • Procedure
A thin hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina into the uterus. Fluid helps give a clear view, and any required treatment is done at the same time.
  • Post-procedure care
You are monitored briefly, given simple recovery advice, and can usually go home the same day.

At Cocoon, experts prioritize minimally invasive keyhole techniques, as most patients can return to normal activities sooner with this.
